Japanese Words & Expressions

Weirdo

Here's a Japanese word for weirdo and wacko:

henjin
へんじん
変人

Meaning:

a weirdo; a wack; a wacko; an eccentric person; a queer fish

Pronunciation:

This word shouldn't be too hard to pronounce. Think of the English words hen and gin. Combine the two (hen-gin), and then it should sound like the Japanese word "henjin." When you pronounce "i," try to make it more like the shorter sound of "ee" as in meet.

Tips:

Here are some usage examples:

Kare [kanojo / omae] wa henjin da.
かれ[かのじょ / おまえ]はへんじんだ。
彼[彼女 / お前]は変人だ。
(He's [She's / You are] a weirdo.)

shakai kara henjin atsukai wo sareru
しゃかいからへんじんあつかいをされる
社会から変人扱いをされる
(be treated as a freak by society)

shakai = society

be treated by = ... kara ... atsukai wo sareru

kiwametsuki no henjin
きわめつけのへんじん
極めつけの変人
(first-class squirrel)
